Louisa Boyd
Information
Louisa Boyd is a multidisciplinary artist and printmaker based in Cheshire, UK. She has been a professional artist for more than twenty years, and works across print, etching and sculpture. Her work is held in public and private collections internationally, and she has exhibited extensively in the UK and abroad.
Rooted in traditional printmaking and heritage craft, Louisa’s practice is centred on a highly detailed and process-led approach. Her etchings are made on copper plates using deep-etch processes and intuitive automatic drawing, building complex layers of line, texture and tone. Traditional technical drawing methods are combined with more spontaneous mark-making to create intricate printed surfaces.
The prints then become the material for her collages and sculptural work. Through cutting, folding, constructing and assembling, she transforms traditional two-dimensional prints into new works and three-dimensional paper sculptures, retaining the detail and tonal qualities of the original etchings while introducing geometric structure, volume and space. The resulting works bring together printmaking, sculpture and craft in a contemporary exploration of nature, geometry and cartography.
Her work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Royal West of England Academy, London Art Fair, Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, New Light and Wells Contemporary. In 2023, she was invited to exhibit at Escher in the Palace in The Netherlands as part of Just Like Escher, an international exhibition celebrating the 125th anniversary of M.C. Escher’s birth. She was also awarded a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) scholarship in 2023 to further develop her printmaking practice.
