Featuring a light blue background and a knot count of over one million per square meter, it is one of the earlier Isfahan pieces and possibly one of the finest ever seen from that era. The rug has been in the private collection of an important Persian dealer for more than 60 years and is in perfect, full-pile condition. It features an extremely well-drawn medallion design, representing a truly magnificent fine Persian rug. Isfahan, made the capital city by Shah Abbas in 1595, is considered one of the most magical cities in Iran. Its magnificent mosques and architecture have been the inspiration for many floral and geometric carpet designs. Isfahan carpets, made from fine wool and silk and generally woven onto silk warp and weft threads, are considered to be among the finest and most durable Persian rugs, allowing the designers and weavers to reflect their art onto the carpet. The best-known recent manufacturers are Seirafian, Haghighi, and Shoreshi. Pure silk rugs in Isfahan are rarely made, but the manufacturer Shoreshi has mastered the skill of making a limited quantity of pure silk rugs using vegetable dyes and high-quality silk.
